FIRST Union supports anti-TPPA campaign

FIRST Union is supporting a new campaign against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), "It's Our Future."

The New Zealand government is negotiating this international agreement that could have a huge effect on the lives of ordinary kiwis. It involves eleven Asian and Pacific-rim countries, including the United States. If it goes ahead, we risk damage to our innovative economy, our pristine environment, our health, and the ability to shape our own future.

Westpac staff – pledging to do their bit

FIRST Union members at Westpac are pledging to do their bit to help improve things at the bank in the lead up to bargaining.

The pledge promises that members will work with their colleagues to fix what’s wrong with Westpac, particularly stressful and bullying management around sales targets. Westpac can afford to be a good employer but needs to do more to make the grade.

300,000 jobs lost while banks rake in billions

UNI Global Union, of which FIRST Union is a member, released a report this week that shows since the beginning of the financial crisis over 300,360 jobs have been lost in the finance sector in 18 countries (UK, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Romania, Moldavia, Greece, Ireland, Australia, India and the US).

A new collective agreement covering the four Progressive Enterprises Distribution Centres has limited the number of casual agency staff the company can use and created more permanent positions.  The agreement creates 51 new permanent jobs this year and limits the number of agency temps that can be used at any one time to 30 percent (previously was as high as 60-70 percent).

Migrant workers meeting in Auckland

The FIRST Union migrant workers network is co-hosting a meeting about a fair deal for migrant workers in a global economy this weekend.

The meeting is co-hosted with Migrante Aotearoa and will be held at the Aotea Centre in Auckland, this Sunday 19 August from 1.30-3pm.
